Insane crazy people, being insane and crazy
Whitnall Park report by Cory Hickman 07-23-2008

Today was the Whitnall Park Road Race (circut really) in the really nice Botanical Gardens in some rural Wisconsin place.  I really like this course for a couple reasons.  First, we had a closed course, and second it had a couple rolling hills.  The rollers suited my strengths so I was hoping to have a good day.  It turned out that I had pretty good legs today and ended up about 30th (not offficial yet) place from about 100 starters.  If only I would have followed my teammate's (Daley, of course)  intel on the race and put myself in better position before the last turn.  Who knows, but there was nothing left to make up positions after this turn, then up the little hill to the finish.  After the 40+ mph blast and dogfight to this corner, I had ZERO cognitive capacity left to execute this manuever.  Seriously insane.

If my wife only knew, she would freak.  This is a crazy thing we do, but awesome too.

About the starters and the "insane crazy people" or whatever.  I mean that in the best of ways, really.  But seriously, I have never had to fight SO hard for position in my entire racing life.  The risks I have seen people take in these Superweek races are just mind numbing.  Maybe I'm too old at 31.  Anywho, today boiled down to a battle between the Rock Racing guys and the Jittery Joe's sqaud.  A few break attemps were allowed maybe 25 seconds, then brought back in one lap.  I followed all of this tactical mastery and just tried not to cross wheels and finish respectably.  I felt pretty good today, comfortable every time up the climb.

JJ's ended up taking the Yellow Jersey from Rock.  Personally, I think that's great.  They did it with HALF the guys compared to RR.  But seeing as Sterling Magnell (previous Yellow owner) has yet to be PAID by Rock Racing, maybe he figured he's had enough?  I doubt it, I think this guy rides from the heart.  My 2 cents.  Read his journal.

Ok, insane, crazy risks.  Check.  Wicked hard core fun?  Check.  Awesome weather?  Check.

Thanks for reading my meaningless blather.
